It's a well-known understatement that beauty standards are now higher than ever. As women, we scrub, tweeze, brush, smudge, color and gloss our way into the faces and bodies we present to the world every day.
In Beyonce's Fearless, she sings, "We flawless, ladies tell 'em, I woke up like this, I woke up like this." This sassy assertion sparked a social media firestorm and inspired women and girls to proudly reveal what they look like upon waking up: bleary eyed, makeup-less, hair askew.
The hashtag #iwokeuplikethis has over a million hits on Instagram alone. Documenting the reality of what we look like when we wake up has spread to the likes of Lena Dunham, Rihanna, Kim Kardashian, and an Instagrammer even dedicated an entire year to documenting her daily just-woke-up look.
For 10 mornings, I documented my own bleary-eyed state. These photos are untouched minus some exposure and slight color tweaks, and were taken within five minutes of getting up. Because I forgot my tripod on this trip (guargh!), I had to get creative with placement and positioning. The results? Well... I can't quite say they're good, but I can say they're an honest look at me.
